Art Commissions
Art commissions refer to custom artworks that are uniquely meaningful to a specific client.
The process begins with a collaborative kick-off meeting to define the intentions of the painting and key elements to be included like the subject, setting, overall mood, and any supporting details like apparel, accessory, a symbolic color. We will also talk through creative aspects of my painting style and define the intended artwork size and price range.
Once a contract is signed and a nonrefundable fifty percent deposit is secured, we’ll flow into the photoshoot. I paint from a combination of custom reference materials including my own photographs, sketches and color studies. Since so many creative intensions are imbedded in the visual references, I choose not to work from other people’s photographs. A keen eye for lighting and composition is paramount from the start and sets the stage for a successful painting that aligns with the defined intentions.
Following the photoshoot, I will present two creative options, and upon the client’s selection I will the start the painting! All artworks will be created using professional grade materials.
My goal in painting commissions is to capture the essence of the subject and bring it to life through my creative decisions and painterly techniques. During a second meeting my clients will get to see the painting in person for the first time! At this point clients may choose to ask for one round of revisions based on specific feedback. It’s important to be as comprehensive as possible so I can best finalize the painting with vibrancy.
Timeline. It’s important to note that oil paintings need time to cure, which can vary based on the thickness of the paint applied and the ambient humidity. Some paintings can take upwards of 3 months to cure before varnishing.
Framing. A frame should enhance a painting, not compete for attention. I frequently guide the framing process by suggesting framing options via a third-party framer. I pass along the framing work at cost, and only bill additionally for my time. Alternatively, clients are welcome to manage this step on their own.
The remaining balance is due upon delivery of the final painting.
I welcome new commission clients! If you have a painting subject you’d like to explore I’d be happy to speak with you.
